Gas tungsten arc welding {GTAW} or TIG welding is a process in which the joining of metals is produced by heating therewith an arc between a tungsten (nonconsumable) electrode and the work.
A shielding gas is used, normally argon.
Normally done with a pure tungsten or tungsten alloy rod, but multiple electrodes are sometimes used.

The heated weld zone, molten metal, and tungsten electrode are shielded from the atmosphere by a covering of inert gas fed through the electrode holder.

Filler metal may or may not be added in tig welding. A weld is made by applying the arc so that the touching workpiece and filler metal are melted and joined as the weld metal solidifies.

This process is similar to other arc welding processes in that the heat is generated by an arc between a nonconsumable electrode and the workpiece, but the equipment and electrode type distinguish itfrom other arc welding processes.
TIG Welding Advantages:

Superior quality welds in Tig welding
Welds can be made with or without filler metal in Tig
Precise control of welding variables (heat)
Free of spatter
Low distortion in Tig Welding

TIG Welding Disadvantages

Requires greater welder dexterity than MIG or stick welding
Lower deposition rates in Tig welding
More costly for welding thick sections

Hi Jake,
Any Auto darkening helmet will be fine. In particular, 3M Autodarkening helmets are really good.
If there is lack of ventilation, I would suggest Welding helmets with respirator.

Thanks for explaining that TIG welding results in low distortion only. My boyfriend has just started his vocational school for welding. I will suggest that he find a used TIG welder for when he starts practicing.

It was interesting when you talked about how argon is normally used as a shielding gas during the arc welding process. I just learned that one of my neighbors is looking for a welding supply service to get the things he needs to set up a small shop in the garage. I'll have to share this info to help him determine which gases he needs to purchase for his welding.

Argon is used for TIG welding. For MIG (GMAW welding), Ar-CO2 (Argon and Carbon-dioxide) mixture or Ar-O2 (Argon and Oxygen) mixture is used.

Hi Braden,
What's the thickness of Tungsten that you want to join? Also filler metal to be used should be of same nominal compostion as of Tungsten base material.

Surely for Stainless Steel sheet products welding, get good welding service. If the Stainless Steel is 304 make sure they are using 308 Tig rod, and if 316 SS, welding rod should be 316 Tig rod.
