WELDING TECHNOLOGY
What is welding?
Welding is a process of joining two similar or dissimilar metals with the help of heat with or without using filler metal and with or without the application of pressure.
It is the most widely used method of joining in industry. Many different energy sources can be used for welding, including a gas flame, an electric arc, a laser, an electron beam, friction and ultrasound.
Welding Advantages and disadvantages:
Advantages of welding/Welding advantages:
1. A good weld is as strong as the base metal.
2. A large no. of metals\alloys can be joined by welding.
3. Repair by welding is very easy.
4. Welding can be easily mechanized.
5. Portable welding equipment is available.
6. General welding equipment is not very costly.
7. Total joining cost is less in case of welding joint.
8. Flexible in operation
9. Metal property does not changes.

Disadvantages of welding/Welding disadvantages:
1. Welding produces harmful radiations, fumes and spatter.
2. A skilled welder is required.
3. Welding heat produces metallurgical changes.
4. Cost of welding equipment (initial cost) is high.
5. Edge preparation is required before welding.
6. More safety devices are required.
7. Jigs and fixtures are required to hold the parts to be welded.
8. Post welding such as chipping and grinding are required.
9. Welding defects weakens the weld.
